Shaoshan, Mao’s birthplace (1893)
On the Mao’s China map as “Shaoshan”
1893–today — Mao’s birthplace, a farming village in Hunan, became a pilgrimage site in the Cultural Revolution, when millions of Red Guards walked or rode here. Visitor numbers fell after 1976 and rose again from the 1990s, as a patriotic and commercial cult of Mao revived.
