Xiaogang village secret contract (1978)
On the Mao’s China map as “Xiaogang”
Nov 1978 — Eighteen farmers in Xiaogang village, Fengyang, Anhui, secretly sign a contract to farm their land as households, and promise to raise each other’s children if the leaders are jailed. Their harvest jumps. By 1984 the household responsibility system had replaced collective farming across China.
