Proclamation of the People’s Republic (1949)
On the Mao’s China map as “The People’s Republic”
1 Oct 1949 — From the Gate of Heavenly Peace, Mao proclaims the People’s Republic before a crowd put at 300,000. The new flag’s four small stars stand for the four classes of “New Democracy” — workers, peasants, the petty bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie — gathered around the large star of the Communist Party that leads them.
