Netherlands · Industrial Revolution
Rich, commercial and late to industrialise. The Dutch Republic of the eighteenth century paid wages as high as England’s and led Europe in shipping and finance, yet without cheap coal it had little reason to mechanise. Its industrial growth came after the 1860s, with railways, the port of Rotterdam serving the Ruhr, and profits from the Cultivation System that forced Javanese peasants to grow export crops for the Dutch state.

Netherlands · Age of Revolutions
The Dutch Republic — old, rich and oligarchic — was the age’s first domino: its Patriot revolt (1787) was crushed by Prussia, then accomplished by France as the Batavian Republic (1795). Vienna made it a kingdom and gave it Belgium; 1830 took Belgium back. Its colonial empire, held through it all, funded the return to great-trading-power in miniature.
