North Macedonia, on the map of history
What was North Macedonia before it was North Macedonia? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History collection — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.
Macedonia (mod. N. Macedonia) · The Rise and Fall of Rome, 264 BC – AD 476
Macedonia: Alexander’s homeland, four times Rome’s enemy, abolished as a kingdom after Pydna (168 BC) — first carved into four client republics forbidden to intermarry or trade across their borders, then, after a pretender’s revolt in 148, made the first Balkan province. From it the Via Egnatia carried the legions east to the Bosporus, and on its ground the Republic died twice: Pharsalus and Philippi are both a short march from the road. Its name outlived its dynasty by 2,100 years and counting.
