Massacres of Poles in Volhynia (1943–44)
On the Refugee crises map as “Volhynia, 1943”
1943–44 — Ukrainian nationalist insurgents kill tens of thousands of Polish civilians, most estimates putting the dead at 40,000 to 60,000 in Volhynia and up to 100,000 with eastern Galicia; Polish reprisals kill perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 Ukrainians in Volhynia and thousands more elsewhere. The violence fed the post-war case for separating the two peoples entirely. Remember them.
