Aligarh Movement (1875–77)
On the Indian independence map as “Aligarh — Sayyid Ahmad Khan’s college”
1875–77 — Sayyid Ahmad Khan founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College to give India’s Muslim gentry an English education within an Islamic frame. In 1887–88 he urged Muslims to keep out of the new Congress, warning that representative government would mean rule by the Hindu majority.
