Great Famine in South India (1876–78)
On the Indian independence map as “The Deccan — the famine of 1876–78”
1876–78 — After the monsoon failed, between about 5.6 and 9.6 million people died across Madras, Bombay, Mysore and Hyderabad. Relief camps paid a ration of one pound of grain and one anna for a day’s labour while wheat was still exported from India. Remember them.
