Famines in the Central Provinces (1896–1900)
On the Indian independence map as “The Central Provinces — the famines of 1896–1900”
1896–97 & 1899–1900 — Two failed monsoons, with plague arriving in Bombay in 1896, killed millions across the Central Provinces, Bundelkhand, Gujarat, Rajputana and the Deccan; estimates for 1896–1902 run from about 6.1 to 8.4 million. The new Famine Codes saved many, and the argument over why so many still died has never closed. Remember them.
