Chinese grain exports during the famine (1959–60)
On the Mao’s China map as “Grain for export”
1959–60 — Even as famine spread, China kept exporting grain, much of it to the Soviet Union to pay for machinery and repay loans: about 4.2 million tonnes in 1959, the highest of the Mao years. Exports fell only in 1960–61, and from 1961 China began buying grain from Canada and Australia.
