Great Famine in Tongwei County (1959–60)
On the Mao’s China map as “Tongwei”
1959–60 — In Tongwei county, Gansu, procurement under the provincial leader Zhang Zhongliang left villages without seed or food, and the county lost a large share of its population to death and flight. Gansu’s official death rate reached 41.3 per thousand in 1960; investigators sent by Beijing that year found whole villages emptied.
