Battle of Kars (1877)
On the Russian Revolution map as “Kars stormed”
17–18 Nov 1877 — The reformed army takes the great Ottoman fortress by night assault. The war of 1877–78 shows what universal service has bought, and the Congress of Berlin, where the great powers rewrote Russia’s peace with the Ottomans, shows its limits: Russia keeps Kars, Batum and southern Bessarabia but loses most of the Balkan settlement it fought for.
