Circassian expulsion (1864)
On the Russian Revolution map as “The Circassian expulsion”
21 May 1864 — At Kbaada (Krasnaya Polyana) the Russian army marks the end of the Caucasian War. Russian officials counted about half a million Circassians, a Muslim people of the western Caucasus, driven to the coast and shipped to the Ottoman Empire; later estimates run to a million or more. Many die of hunger and disease. Circassians remember it as a national catastrophe.
