Emancipation Manifesto (1861)
On the Russian Revolution map as “The Emancipation Manifesto”
19 Feb/3 Mar 1861 — Alexander II signs the manifesto freeing some 22 million privately owned serfs, and on 5/17 March he reads it aloud himself in this riding hall. Freedom comes with land the peasants must buy back over 49 years, which is why many refused to believe it was the real thing.
