January Uprising (1863–64)
On the Russian Revolution map as “The January Rising”
Jan 1863–1864 — A Polish rising for independence, set off by a conscription drive aimed at young patriots, spreads from Warsaw into Lithuania and Belorussia as a guerrilla war, and in February 1863 one of its largest early battles is lost here at Siemiatycze. Hundreds of executions and mass deportations follow, and the reforming Tsar becomes the enforcer of Russian rule.
